FINE ARTS AND CULTURE ACADEMY

Mosaics Course

Mosaic is a very ancient technique that has been used for thousands of years to decorate walls, floors, interiors and also exteriors because of its resistance to atmospheric agents and to its long durability. The most important ancient mosaics are conserved in Italy: Ravenna, Monreale, Florence and many other cities. In Florence many artists and craft shops are still dedicated to this ancient art and the town is therefore one of the most interesting places in the world to attend a course of mosaics in order to approach and learn this fascinating artistic expression. Even with the technical evolution of materials, the base has always been the use of mosaic tiles and their composition. During the Mosaics Course of the Leonardo da Vinci Academy of Florence, after a historical introduction of mosaics from the antique Greek-Roman era to the present day, different techniques will be introduced, pausing on the expressive capacity of the various types of mosaics and on the use of color. In the beginning, students will learn to replicate subjects using ceramic tiles, while those who already have some knowledge of mosaics will use enamel or marble to create original works. However, to create their own style, students will have to practice using all of the compositional elements of a mosaic: shadow and light, movement, copying reality and fantasy, the use of warm and cool colors, relief, depth, prospective. All of this, so the dimensional work becomes a vital three-dimensional space.

A few of the topics discussed during the course are preparation of the base, techniques on how to cut materials (tiles, ceramic, enamel, marble), creation of the mosaic following the direct and indirect methods, and laying techniques.
