Many artists have made famous frescoes that can now be admired in churches, palaces and museums of Florence: Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, Fra Angelico, Vasari, Giotto and many others. A course of fresco in Florence is a fundamental experience for those who intend to approach and learn this kind of painting. It is a very ancient technique that is made by applying colors on fresh plaster. The colors become completely incorporated into the wall structure once it dries. During the Fresco Course of the Leonardo da Vinci Academy of Florence students will learn how to use river sand and lime or putty materials used for the creation of a fresco according to the Medieval and Renaissance rules. The different phases of drafting will be analyzed: rendering, curling, plaster, intonachino. We will then analyze the nature and chemical composition of colors and the carbonation process (integration of colors into the dried media). The students will transfer their drawing onto the wall (spolvero), and divide their work into “days” to check the implementation and to make any necessary corrections and changes, which is very difficult once the plaster has dried, even though it is easily fixed by using the so-called “dry touch up” method. During the course a story of mural painting, the art of “buon fresco” painting according to Giotto, and the various schools of color preparation will also be taught.
Courses start every Monday, and lessons are held in the afternoon: Monday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
