Sculpture Course

In Florence worked artists such as Michelangelo, Cellini, Giambologna, Donatello, Ghiberti, Verrocchio and many others. Each of them has left sculptures that have marked the history of world art, including Michelangelo's David. For an artist, a sculpture course in Italy, especially in Florence, in contact with these masterpieces and this tradition, will be very important and formative. Sculpture is a visual art that produces three-dimensional art objects and is carried out with a high number of techniques and a wide variety of materials. Sculptors may remove (carving), model (as clay) and assemble by welding and other processes, they work with stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials, they mold and cast.
The sculpture course of the Academy Leonardo da Vinci of Florence consists of the creation of sculptures in clay, wax, plaster and marble with subjects chosen by the student with the possibility of copies in gypsum. The course initially provides introductory and fundamental drawing lessons in order to illustrate how to plan and carry out sketches for tri-dimensional objects. The relationship between drawing and volume and between real space and perceived dimension is studied as well. Then, the different techniques, both classic and modern, of using clay, marble and plaster will be presented, their features and the tools that should be used: from clay modeling for the creation of “bas-relief” or “full relief” sculptures, to the creation of ceramic pieces, from the realization of marble sculptures, to the working of plaster by using “direct application” technique onto a metal framework. According to their personal expericence and time at disposal students create a sculpture work that they will bring home at the end of the course.
