Utopie Radicali at Palazzo Strozzi

The spaces of the Strozzina in Palazzo Strozzi will host a new exhibition until January 21: “Radical Utopies. Beyond architecture”.
On display 320 artworks by Archizoom, Remo Buti, 9999, Gianni Pettena, Superstudio, UFO, Zziggurat and many others, that include design objects, clothing, jewelry, ceramics, photos, collages, models, videos, and installations.
The exhibition features all the architects of the Florentine Radical movement, reunited here for the first time, the same personalities that made Florence the center of a creative revolution in the 1960’s and 70’s. They are also the same artists exposed in museums such as the MoMA of New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal, the FRAC Centre of Orleans and the MAXXI in Rome.
The Florentine movement of Radical architecture was born within the Faculty of Architecture in the aftermath of the 1966’s flood, that made necessary a reconsideration of urban spaces, and met the provocations and the ferment of the Sixtyeight.
Through the use of a cold and sharp irony, and of topics related to the utopia of science fiction and the irrational, the movement aimed at shaking the foundations of society and challenge the very definition of architecture and its traditions.
Among the works on display, alongside the utopian interpretations of the world rendered through drawings, photomontages and the images of artworks such as “Monumento continuo e Architettura interplanetaria” by Superstudio, “No Stop City” by Archizoom, “La città n. 551” by Remo Buti, “Linear City” by Zziggurat and “Giro d’Italia” by UFO; are the now iconic “Superonda and Safari” by Archizoom, “Bazar” by Superstudio and Rumble Sofa by Gianni Pettena.
Divided in thematic sections, the display leaves also space jewelry, clothing and for an important section dedicated to publishing and radical advertising.

It doesn’t end here. The exhibition extends beyond the museum spaces, in the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi and inside the Mercato Centrale, with two installations of the Urboeffimeri series by the UFO group: inflatable structures covered by word games and provocative slogans, that back in 1968 had been installed in meaningful places of the city of Florence like Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria.
Do not miss this provocative display, that takes us back in time when the revolutions were made.
