Another “David” at the Galleria dell’Accademia

Another “David” at the Galleria dell’Accademia

Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence

From 05/05/2015 through 20/09/2015

Through September 20, at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, besides the prestigious and immortal David of Michelangelo it’s possible to admire another David!

Similar to the original, but re-elaborated in contemporary style, it’s called “Hero” and it’s placed in the museum’s court. It’s built with the same Carrara marble and it has the same hight (5,17 meters) but it weighs a bit less than 5 tons, against the 5,56 tons of Michelangelo’s masterpiece.

The “contemporary” David is a very personal interpretation of the Pugliese architect and designer Antonio Pio Saracino, working in New York since over a decade. The work will be the star of the event “Hero in Firenze. Tribute to the David: Saracino plays Michelangelo”, promoted by the Direction of the Galleria dell’Accademia, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. and Pmg Italia, and sponsored by Gem Group that has commissioned the work to Saracino – copy of the public sculpture commissioned in 2013 to the Pugliese artist by the Italian Government and Eni, and currently exhibited in the Three Bryant Park in New York, to symbolize the friendship between Italy and United States – that from the end of September will be transferred to the Expo 2015.

For the creation of the sculpture, Saracino got inspired by Michelangelo’s shapes translating them in a modern and original way, through the breakdown of the volumes into 33 parallel flat surfaces of various thickness.
The statue celebrates the Omnipotence and its stratified anthropomorphic structure represents the universal skill of mankind of pointing out its presence in the world with its constant will to build.
